Negotiating Pay for International Roles

By Bonga Jobs

Prepare a fair, evidence-led negotiation that accounts for scope, location, contract type, and total value.

Professional negotiation is a conversation about scope and value, not a contest to demand the largest number without context.Know your requirementsSet a minimum acceptable arrangement, a target, and the terms that matter besides pay. Include working hours, leave, equipment, payment timing, and contract security.Anchor your case in the roleUse the responsibilities, expected outcomes, specialized skills, and relevant evidence from your work. Avoid relying on personal expenses or unverifiable market claims as the only argument.Ask for the complete pictureClarify whether the figure is gross or net, which currency applies, who handles taxes and fees, and whether benefits or equity have conditions. Ask how a contractor rate relates to an employee package.Respond clearlyThank the employer, state the adjustment you are requesting, and give a short reason. If pay cannot move, negotiate another term only when it genuinely improves the arrangement and is recorded in writing.
