Negotiating Salary and Benefits With an African Employer
By Bonga Jobs
Prepare for compensation discussions by understanding the full offer and communicating your expectations clearly.
Prepare a reasonable rangeConsider the role's responsibilities, your experience, location, sector, and the value you can demonstrate. Use trusted professional contacts and current vacancy information as reference points, but do not treat another person's package as a guaranteed market rate.Review the whole packageAsk about gross or net pay, currency, payment date, allowances, insurance, leave, pension or statutory contributions, transport, equipment, and review timing. For remote or cross-border work, clarify who handles taxes and required registrations.Trade thoughtfullyIf the budget is fixed, ask whether another term can change, such as a review after probation, flexible hours, learning support, or a defined allowance. Get the final offer in writing and do not resign until the contract and start date are clear.
