A weekly job search plan that leaves room for better applications

A simple routine helps you spend less time scrolling and more time applying for roles that fit.

Job searching can expand to fill every hour without producing better applications. A weekly routine gives each task a place: finding opportunities, checking them, tailoring documents and learning from the response.

Monday: set the target

Choose two or three role titles and the locations or remote arrangements you can accept. List your non-negotiables, such as work authorization, schedule and contract type. Search the current listings and employer careers pages, then save only openings that broadly match. A short, relevant shortlist is more useful than an inbox full of alerts.

Tuesday: verify and prioritise

Check each role at its original source. Record the closing date, required qualifications and application instructions. Mark a vacancy “high priority” when you meet the core requirements and can explain why the work fits you. Mark unclear or suspicious listings for verification rather than applying immediately.

Wednesday and Thursday: apply with evidence

Tailor your CV to the strongest roles. Select examples that show the requested skills, write a concise cover note when required and proofread the employer name. Keep a copy of what you submitted. If one application takes longer because it asks for a work sample, schedule that work instead of rushing a weak answer.

Friday: update the tracker

A spreadsheet or notebook is enough. Use these columns: employer, role, source URL, deadline, date applied, status, contact and next action. Note rejections or interviews without treating each outcome as a verdict on your worth. Look for patterns: are you targeting the right level, showing enough evidence and applying before deadlines?

Make room for progress outside applications

Spend a little time each week improving one example in your portfolio, practising an interview answer or speaking with someone in your field. Set a stopping time for the search. If you are currently employed or caring for others, reduce the number of applications rather than removing the verification and tailoring steps. The routine should fit your life well enough to repeat next week.
